I can admit it, I am a zoo snob. So for years even though I live is FAR North Dallas if I wanted to take the kids to the Zoo, we went to Ft. Worth. To be brutally honest, it was just a better zoo. As I went to Metro Moms events at the DAllas Zoo I could see that they were trying to be a better zoo. Yet it was hard to walk past the tiny elephant enclousure or the practical cage the giraffes lived in without longing for the Ft. Worth zoo. Especially after Ft. Worth Expanded. But Dallas was trying. The Children's Zoo was a step in the right direction and both the tiger and Gorilla enclosures were really great, but still I was not totally feeling it, but they were trying so we decided to get a membership and support the Dallas Zoo. I thought of the Dallas Zoo as the little Engine that could. It was chugging along building momentum with each step. It just needed to keep going and say " I think I can!"

As part of our membership benefits we got to preview the new Giants of the Savanah exhibit that opens to the public this weekend. From the second we walked through the gates I knew the Little Zoo that could had made it over the mountain and was chugging along at full steam! All I can say is WOW!!! The Elephant enclosure is HUGE, it is hard to believe that just a year ago there was this tiny little area and now they have a massive plains area to call their home. There is also an area where the zoo keepers can feed the elephants not 5 feet from where you stand. They also have a great lookout similiar to the Gorrila and Tiger areas that give you a lot of informaton ( and air condition) . The Wart Hogs have a great mud run and lot of room to play. My favorite area by far was the giraffe area. For $5 you can buy some food and the giraffes will come right up to you and eat from your hand. I really can not wait until the weather is a bit cooler and getting to really enjoy this new area. Ft. Woth better watch out because I think Dallas just surpassed them!
